I lowered my head and admitted everything, with my legs trembling and my palms sweating. Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle hug. “I know you just wanted to help. Let’s clean up together,” she said. Encouraged by her words, I lifted my spirits and took immediate action. I think Mom understood I was trying to find my place in the family.
